I came across this in my local supermarket. It’s not a sign you see everywhere in the store. For instance there’s no such sign on the crisps shelves.

But on the alcohol shelves it is apparently essential to have CCTV to protect me. From what? Are the bottles likely to jump off the shelves and beat me to a pulp if I look at them the wrong way? Is that particular aisle stuffed full of violent drunks?

No – it’s because this is where the high value items are.

So please don’t treat me like a mindless idiot. The cameras are nothing to do with protecting me, it’s about protecting your income.

So I suggest you tell the truth and use a sign like

“This aisle has CCTV to make sure no-one nicks the booze – so don’t”
